Waitress
Just watched Waitress and was struck by how it reminded me of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, nicely updated. The concept of a “novel of awakening” is one I find fascinating — rather than come-of-age, female protagonists instead, in their late 20s or 30s, “awake to limitations,” and Waitress’s protagonist spent 90% of the film doing just that. Some aspects don’t gel as well with a comparison to The Awakening or Madame Bovary or A Doll’s House, but on the whole, a nice addition to my little list of awakening texts. Like another “awakening” movie, Thelma and Louise, it takes place far away from the east coast, where I suppose we all are aware of our limitations young.
