Dorky English Teacher Reviews Pop Music
I don’t listen to much top 40 anymore. Too old, too much autotune, blah blah blah. I was feeling out of touch so I spent the last couple week listening to Sirius/XM Hits 1 when in the car, and here are my thoughts.
“Like a G6” - Far East Movement
Other than being totally repetitive to the point of being, perhaps, some sort of subliminal call to arms, I don’t get this at...

Open Letter to NPR & Bill Simmons
An Open Letter to Bill Simmons (aka “The Sports Guy”) and National Public Radio (NPR):
Let me start with my thesis: You two kids need to get together.
NPR, you are a national treasure. Seriously. I’m not just buttering you up here. Your news coverage is reliable and comprehensive. I know that many folks in my demographic (liberalish, educated, under 40) are devoted to you. ...

google chrome
I’ve been using google chrome here on the work computer for 2 hours this morning, and I have to say, I’m impressed. It’s minimalist, attractive, and intuitive.

More birds!
The feeder is exploding! New visitors include some common characters: Red-winged blackbirds, common grackles, among others. There’s been a slightly greenish bird I can’t quite identify as well as blue jays and cardinals. I appreciated the simultaneous appearance of a blue jay and cardinal yesterday, even though they didn’t play any baseball.
I’ll be refilling the feeder...
Birds!
I got a phat (no one says that anymore, do they? I suppose I mean “sick”) bird feeder for my birthday. It’s a “Yankee Flipper,” designed to thwart squirrels. It took about 2 weeks for birds to realize it was there, but now it is a veritable birdfest. This morning we had American Goldfinches and also witnessed a skirmish between a white-tipped dove and a chipmunk...
Two new recipes tonight
Made two new items for dinner. The first was Chipotle Salmon Burgers. We made them on the stove top on the grill pan instead of on the frill (salmon is too fall-aparty). They were spicy indeed (thank you chipotle peppers), but very tasty - a real keeper. The other was also a Cooking Light recipe for Green Beans with Potatoes and Chunky Tomatoes. Was good, but also spicy (even though I halved...

Waitress
Just watched Waitress and was struck by how it reminded me of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, nicely updated. The concept of a “novel of awakening” is one I find fascinating — rather than come-of-age, female protagonists instead, in their late 20s or 30s, “awake to limitations,” and Waitress’s protagonist spent 90% of the film doing just that. Some aspects...

Another set of end-of-the-year faculty meetings over. Bliss.

This is a blog by Jeong Soo Kim, a student of mine. During the school year, he updates it every day with pictures from the day and commentary. It is excellent and he’s updating it this summer while he is home in Korea.

Trying out tumblr
Today’s big victory? Delicious turkey satay burgers on the grill. They meant that I had to purchase “fish oil” at the supermarket, which was a first, but the final result was most excellent.
